Great article, Mark. My favorite being the last paragraph. Can't forget about the "outhouse on a stick" of which you have broadcasted many a game. At least there have been a few upgrades over the years with all the gigs you have done. :)

So glad you guys broadcast games… games on the radio seem to be few and far between anymore.

Keep up the good work!

Awww, I recall our time broadcasting on the top of the restrooms near the 15-yard line with Salem Academy at Union HS in about 1988, with plastic over our stat sheets and equipment as we experienced 3 of the 4 seasons that day. Yes, AD's do their best to accommodate broadcasters. Some outside of S-K could take lessons from our local hosts.

Schools and AD's please consider: Include the media's thoughts in your booth planning or upgrades. Don't pull a Sherwood and move up to 6A and not improve your venue. Don't offer media an outdoor perch (Sorry SS fans). Both nearby schools and others like Lake O. lag and won't upgrade. With some pre-season or pre-game conversation and planning, Mark and I've been fortunate to have at least ok places to broadcast from.

This all comes with the territory and broadcasting road games. :-)

So, now I must prepare better for 2023 using Mark's checklist. Should I include hand wipes and t-paper? -- Good stuff Gilman!! :-D

Oh, if interested, listen to the North Salem at Jefferson game Friday on AM 1430 KYKN, or kykn.com. (Shameless plug)

Appreciate your efforts! Years ago when I helped build the Saxon press box I actually thought of you radio guys by building your own radio room! Stay warm!
