Weekend wrap up: Sprague wins eleventh straight district wrestling crown
Olys send six district champions to state
It was another workman-like district wrestling tournament for the Sprague Olympians over the weekend.
The Olys had six district boys champions in the day-long Central Valley Conference meet at North Salem High on Saturday, winning the team title with 368 points over McNary (283.5), North Salem (247.5), West Salem (226.5) and South Salem (223).
The outstanding wrestler of the tournament was Max Blanco of McNary at 106 pounds. Sprague’s first-year coach AJ Antillon was named coach of the year. Sprague not only won the district tournament, but the 2023 CVC dual meet crown.
Sprague finished second at the OSAA’s 6A wrestling tournament last year. Returning to Portland to defend his title from last year is 285 pound grappler Cole Skeketee, who currently has a record of 40-1. This year’s event begins February 22nd at the Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
Girls from across Salem-Keizer also advanced to state after competing at their 6A/5A regional tournament two weekends ago. Several of the female wrestlers took to the mats at the district tourney.
