Sunshine is forecast: key prep SB/BB games upcoming
Previewing the week in Salem-Keizer HS softball, baseball
Most of the prep softball and baseball seasons in the Salem-Keizer area have been washed out by the heavy rains that plagued the Willamette Valley for much of March and April. But weather forecasts are calling for a steady dose of sun this coming week—and that means drier conditions and hopefully better field conditions for everyone. Take a look below at the Central Valley Conference schedule for the week.
THIS WEEK’S SOFTBALL GAMES: McNary on the throne, South the contender, West the pretender?
McNary is still the top team in the CVC, with South Salem still holding on to a top ten ranking, despite a lower league record than West Salem. South will attempt to show themselves worthy of their ranking Tuesday when they host West.
Wednesday will put South in the crosshairs again, as the Saxons travel to McNary to face the explosive Celts.
PREP BASEBALL GAMES OF NOTE: All about Sprague, South Salem
Sprague—last year’s top local playoff team, and South Salem—the up and coming young squad—are finally going to play one another, and there could be some answers about who will rule the CVC baseball roost.
South Salem “hosts” games Monday and Friday against the Olys at Willamette’s John Lewis Field in Bush Park. (Recall South’s baseball field was vandalized in December). Sprague entertains the Saxons on Wednesday. The Oly “Old Guard” directed by Coach Luke Buchheit will look top remain at the top of the local baseball heap with a senior laden line-up, while South Coach Max Price and his young guns of mostly underclassmen will make their case for a league crown.
Buchheit says the experience of his team has served them well so far. In his words, “all of our seniors have found way to contribute to our success.” Sprague’s offense has been very impressive to date, averaging a full eight runs per contest.
Weather forecasts call for cool weather early, with a decided warming trend—into the 80s—by week’s end.
Grab the sunblock and the shades and set up the lawn chairs along the baselines (out of play) to enjoy softball or baseball later this week.
Some of us need to find a day to finally mow the lawn.
