State Wrestling Brackets for this week’s tournaments in Portland
Salem-Keizer with several #1, #2 seeds in boys, girls brackets at 6A, 5A/6A levels
The Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum in Portland will be filled with singlet-clad wrestlers this week for the OSAA State Wrestling Championships. The lower levels (1A-4A) will compete first, with 5A and 6A grapplers taking to the mats on Friday and Saturday (March 3-4).
The brackets were released to the public on Monday, and plenty of Salem-Keizer wrestlers are represented in the top two seeds of their respective tournaments.
In the 6A boys tournament, three competitors from Salem-Keizer are number one in their weight classes, while another is the second seed in his bracket.
McNary’s Max Blanco, who was last week’s outstanding wrestler in the CVC Districts meet at North Salem High, is ranked #1 at 106 pounds. Blanco is 24-1 on the year. He is joined by South Salem’s Alex Decrozuic (30-1) at 220 pounds, and defending state champion Cole Steketee of Sprague (42-1) who returns at 285 pounds. Anton Chacon of South is ranked second in the 160 pound weight class.
For the 5A/6A girls bracket, one wrestler is top seeded, while four others are second seeds in their weight classes.
West Salem’s Reese Lawson is ranked #1 at 145 pounds in her bracket. McKay has three girls ranked second in their weight classes: Sarahi Chavez (100 pounds), Angelina Paniagua (105), and Marilyn Mentado (125). McNary’s Ali Martinez is the second seed at 190 pounds.
This is the fourth year for girls championship wrestling in Oregon, but the first time for state championship brackets at the 1A-4A levels.
Boys wrestling championships have been around since 1947, and have been held every year but 2021 due to COVID.
