Sports Shorts: pre-football camp edition
Former West star on preseason football watch list, local baseball star on Olympic team, and more
Prep football begins its fall camps beginning next week, and Gilman on Sports will be focused on previews for all six Salem-Keizer teams. Here are some other sports items of note that could get lost in the shuffle.
National watchlist status for former West Salem footballer Anthony Gould
Oregon State wide receiver and punt returner Anthony Gould has been named to the Hornung Award watch list.
Gould—who was one of two OSU players interviewed during the Pac-12 media day a few weeks ago—is looking to join 2022 Hornung Award winner Jack Colletto as a winner of the award, which is given annually to the nation's most versatile player. Gould, a 2022 All-American, returned two punts for touchdowns last season. He led the nation averaging 18.57 yards per punt return. He also caught 27 passes for 457 yards and three touchdowns. The watch list was shared late last week. Colleto is currently in training camp with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers.
Gould is also listed as a preseason all-Pac 12 performer and a preseason All-American on several teams.
The 5-8 redshirt junior played his high school football for Coach Shawn Stanley at West Salem High.
Beavers defensive back Akili Arnold has been selected to the Wuerrfel Trophy watch list. The Wuerrfel Trophy is an annual award given for excellence in service in the community. Arnold, who was also nominated for the AFCA Good Works Team, has been active in the community, working with events such as the Night of the Stars.
On the field, Arnold has played in 39 games for the Beavers in his career, making 91 tackles with five pass breakups.
Young South Salem baseballer on Olympic squad
Congratulations to Saxon catcher Teagan Scott for making the final baseball roster for Team USA. Teagan is one of 20 15u players in the country who will represent the United States in the battle for baseball world supremacy at his age level.
The team will train in Miami before heading to the Dominican Republic in September.
Teagan was a second team, all-state catcher last spring as a freshman for the Saxons. South Salem won the 2023 CVC baseball title, and advanced to the second round of the OSAA 6A playoffs.
Local Athletic Director shuffle: phase two
In a shift that has happened routinely in Salem-Keizer Schools for decades, McNary’s administration has been shuffled.
Longtime principal Erik Jespersen has been moved to the district administrative offices on Lancaster Drive to deal with curriculum. In Keizer itself, Scott Gragg moves from assistant principal and athletic director after seven years to become the newest principal at McNary—and Dan Borresen moves into the AD role for the Celtics.
The move last week comes several weeks after Sprague had Clinton Gertenrich step down to take on solely assistant principal duties, while assistant principal Jim Miller moved into the Olympians AD position.
