Prep Round Up Week Two: mixed, but improved results
West Salem, McKay still looking for their first win
Another week of high school football is in the books. Here is a rundown of how the teams fared—it was a slight improvement from week one.
Sprague 56, Beaverton 14: The Olys’ Drew Rodriguez had four touchdown receptions of 30, 21, 70, and 9 yards as the Olympians responded to last week’s narrow loss at Liberty with a decisive home win over the now 0-2 Beavers. Sprague QBs Athan Palmateer and Wil Hassoun combined for 318 passing while splitting time under center.
Sprague’s Barik Hill also had touchdown runs for four and two yards in the decisive victory. As a team, the Olympians rolled up 472 yards offensively.
Sprague (1-1) has the unenviable task of meeting Sheldon (2-0) on Friday. The sixth-ranked Irish upset #2 West Linn 35-21 in a Thursday night showdown at West Linn.
North Salem 46, David Douglas 0: North Salem improved to 2-0 to start the season—a first for the team in at least a decade—as the Vikings blanked David Douglas 46-0 on the Scots’ home field.
Viks quarterback TC Manumaleuna threw for a career-best four touchdowns. The junior was 7 for 9 for 150 total yards. All four scoring throws went to Erick Gonzalez, who had 120 receiving yards total.
Senior running back Josiah Davis had eight carries for 84 yards, and also had a fumble recovery on defense for North, which stifled the David Douglas offense from start to finish.
North puts its unblemished record on the line Friday in their home opener against Roseburg. The visiting Indians are 0-1, and had their last game against Nelson canceled at halftime due to heavy forest fire smoke surrounding their home stadium. Roseburg lost their opener to Mountainside 35-0.
Lake Oswego 14, West Salem 0: While North Salem is off to a semi-historic start to the season, the West Salem Titans are in a very unfamiliar position—winless after two games. The Titans defense played well, but the offense couldn’t get the ball in the end zone against the stout Lake Oswego D in the shutout loss.
The visiting Lakers scored on a pair of passes, one late in the first quarter, the other in the early fourth quarter to take the non-conference contest and to improve to 2-0 in the process. West had a late scoring opportunity in the first half, but the ball was dropped in the end zone. Both teams ended the night with just over 200 yards each offensively.
Coach Shawn Stanley says his young team made some good plays, but more adjustments will be needed for week three. West begins Special District One “league play” at home versus North Medford (0-2), who lost at 5A Bend in week two, 39-7.
South Salem 42, Sunset 7: The Saxons ran their early season record to 2-0, using offensive starters through only three quarters in the rout of the visiting Apollos (1-1) of the Metro League.
Senior quarterback Daschel Smith threw for 518 yards with five touchdowns on 31-39 passes. Saxon senior wideouts Tini Tinitali and Zach Wustigg each caught a pair of TDs for South.
The Saxon defense was also stellar in the win, limiting Sunset to just 272 total yards and just one touchdown in the third quarter.
The Saxons begin Special District One play with a Saturday afternoon home game (3 pm) against Grants Pass.
Tualatin 44, McNary 19: After being shutout in their opener, the McNary Celtics found some offense, but still fell at home to perennial football power Tualatin.
Jake Allen had a five yard TD run, and Ben DeVos caught a 55 yard touchdown pass from Jackson Alt for the Celts. Head coach Connor Astley says the offensive line “played great” and the team ran the ball effectively, but some costly penalties and missed throws stalled their productivity at times.
Place kicker Jesse Dyer also connected on a 30-yard field goal—his first of the season, and Hunter Roberto converted on a pair of two-point conversions.
On defense, Astley says his team still has work to do in communicating with each other. He also says Tualatin’s talented receiving corps was very effective at taking advantage of their defensive miscues.
McNary (0-2) begins Special District One action on Friday with a long road trip to South Medford (2-0), 21-7 winners in week two over Del Norte, California.
Dallas 33, McKay 21: The Royal Scots led 21-14 in the third quarter, but were outscored 19-0 the rest of the way for their second straight heartbreaking loss to open the 2022 season.
Dallas senior running back Emilio Miranda had 107 yards rushing, carrying the ball 15 times in the game. Junior Dominic Sobota was the defensive standout for the Dragons (1-1) with six tackles on the night.
McKay had another solid game from junior running back Jamahl Wilson, who had two touchdowns and better than 100 yards rushing on the evening, while junior QB Kyrin Fuinaono threw for over 200 yards—including a TD pass to junior wide out Anthony Justice.
McKay (0-2) faces 2-0 South Albany on the road next Friday.
ODDS AND ENDS
Unusual start: Coach Shawn Stanley says his team’s 0-2 record to start the season hasn’t been duplicated since 2008. That year, he recalls, the team lost to South Medford and David Douglas—but later recorded a big upset over then-second ranked Tigard. Here’s hoping for similar results for West fans.
Officials balancing act: In case you haven’t checked a conference schedule, at least one school each week is playing their home game on a night or day other than Friday. The move by Larry Staab, head of the local football officials association, was aimed at avoiding overload for the twelve crews of officials that cover games which range from youth and middle school teams, to the high schools. Staab says he had to borrow a crew from Portland for September 16th due to officiating needs at the middle school level. So far so good. By the way, Larry Staab is always looking for new faces to blow whistles at games for all levels. You can start the process by going to the OSAA’s link for potential new officials at: https://www.osaa.org/new-officials/index.html
Road beat down and lessons learned: Defending 5A football champion Silverton got a lesson in humility on Friday night after taking a very long road trip to the Sacramento area for a non-league contest. The 575 mile, 8 ½ drive took the team to El Dorado Hills, California. The Foxes faced Oak Ridge High School, with a student population (2400+) that is double that of Silverton’s. The game, scheduled by first year coach Dan Lever, was brought over with him when he moved from Tualatin. Silverton lost the game 63-0. There were no serious injuries recorded during the game, but the Foxes were seriously out-sized and were predictably discouraged by the outcome. One parent I talked with said it didn’t hurt the team to learn how to lose with grace. Amen.
Former Celtic makes first college appearance: Former McNary standout Junior Walling—who transferred this past spring from Oregon State to Nevada—got to see some action for the Wolfpack on Saturday. Walling, who missed the team’s home opener while nursing an ankle injury, was in on special teams for Nevada in a 55-41 loss to Incarnate Word of Texas. Walling appeared on the kickoff, kick return and punt teams during the game. He did not record a tackle.
Wedding bells: South Salem Coach Scott Dufault, his wife Anne Marie, and his family will be busy this week, and much of the busy-ness will have little to do with football. Dufault’s daughter Jordan, a 2010 graduate of South, is getting married this week. Those are all the details that will be provided here. No actual bets on what color tux the Coach will wear… but Columbia Blue is the favorite.
Thanks for the information. Interesting as usual!!
