Summer can typically be a lull-time for most local sports items. Here are some points of interest just recently released or coming soon.
Russ Blunk: unretired. After stepping down in April as sports information director at Hawaii-Hilo where he served for five years, Russ is back in the game—serving as the Sports Communications Director for the Pac West Conference—which includes eleven schools from Hawaii and California. His new duties include running the conference website and social accounts, coordinating awards, all conference teams, while also working at all conference tournaments, and league meetings. Most of the work will allow Blunck to operate from his home on the northern Oregon Coast. Russ has previously worked at Western Oregon University in Monmouth. He officially begins with the Pac West Conference on August first.
Evina Westbrook: just breaking into the line-up. The former South Salem High and UConn basketball star has made exactly one appearance since being signed by the WNBA’s Washington Mystics. Westbrook was picked up by Washington after being released by last place Minnesota. In her one appearance on June 28thvs. Atlanta, Westbrook scored three points on one long-range jumper, while adding three assists and one steal in eleven minutes. She also committed three fouls and two turnovers. It has been the only game opportunity for Evina so far. Washington’s next game is Sunday at Connecticut.
