New month? New team for Evina Westbrook
Former South Salem, UConn star now with the WNBA’s Washington Mystics
I blinked and almost missed it. Salem’s Evina Westbrook is playing for yet another WNBA team. Three days ago, Westbrook was released by the Minnesota Lynx. She had signed with Minnesota after being let go by Seattle shortly after she was drafted. Evina played in 14 games for the Lynx in May and June, averaging 2.6 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 12.3 minutes per game.
But today—after a short break—Westbrook is back in the league, and she has moved up the standings in the process. Minnesota was mired in last place with Indiana with a record of 5-14. Now in Washington, Evina is on a team in fifth place and with a winning record at 12-9, three games back of first place Las Vegas.
East Coast media reports indicate Westbrook should see some playing time, filling a hole in the Mystics’ line-up created by a season-ending injury to former Connecticut teammate Christyn Williams.
Westbrook starred at South Salem High School, winning state titles in 2015 and 2016, while being named Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2017. She spent two years of her college career at Tennessee, then moved to Connecticut where she graduated this past spring.
Evina announced her move to Washington in a simple tweet today.
