McKay wins Oregon Boys 5A Soccer Championship, 2-1
Title is first team crown for the Scots in 36 years
Junior forward Abdoulie Jallow scored both goals for McKay, and the Royal Scots gave up just a penalty kick to conference rival West Albany, enroute to the school’s first team title since 1986, downing the Bulldogs 2-1 at Hillsboro Stadium on Saturday to win the Oregon 5A Boys Soccer Championship.
The Scots, who needed overtime in the semifinals to beat LaSalle Prep 2-1, got off to a fast start against West Albany.
Jallow dribbled through the West Albany defense and punched it into the goal from 6 yards out just 8:20 into the match to take the early 1-0 advantage.
The Bulldogs responded less than two minutes later, when Henry Catlin nailed a penalty kick with 9:53 gone in the contest to tie it up at one goal apiece.
The score remained tied until the 52nd minute. This time, Jallow took a header pass from junior Miguel Garcia, and pounded the ball into the net to give McKay the 2-1 lead—which they never relinquished.
McKay had 19 shots on goal for the game, compared to just five for West Albany. The game got a bit intense after Jallow’s second goal. Four yellow cards were issued in the last 27 minutes of play—three of them against West Albany. A total of six yellow cards were handed out in the contest—all but one against the Bulldogs.
The championship victory capped off an unbeaten season for McKay, which finished 17-0—including 13 shutouts on the year. In Mid Willamette Conference play on October 27th, the Scots blanked West Albany, 3-0.
The team title is the first for McKay High School since 1986, when the girls tennis team and boys track team won championships in the spring of that year.
The future looks bring for McKay’s soccer program for next season—as 16 of 19 team members are juniors, sophomores or freshmen.
