Local teams gear up for fall sports seasons
Led by football, Salem-Keizer squads for fall sports prepare for their debuts in two weeks
Weather forecasts, depending on which phone or computer app you use, are forecasting temperatures well over 100 degrees for several days in a row. But even with those unusually warm days, prep competitors in the sports of football, volleyball, soccer, and cross country will be working out together for the next few weeks.
Football teams, which routinely practice early with helmets and just tee shirts and shorts, will have to watch the heat index carefully. Similar issues face the volleyball teams inside unairconditioned gyms.
McKay continues to compete at the 5A level, and will look to improve upon its 3-5 record last year In the Mid Willamette Conference.
The rest of the teams in the Central Valley Conference will be jockeying for position in the so-called Special District One, which merges CVC and Southern Oregon teams together for football only again in 2023.
South Salem (6-1), Sprague (4-3), North Salem (3-4), West Salem (1-6), and McNary (0-7) will all look to improve upon those 2022 marks in SD-1. South Salem has a signal caller returning to their ranks this fall, Sprague has a brand new coach and offense, North Salem has the area’s top returning quarterback and a new offensive threat, while West Salem hopes to avoid the injury bug that decimated them last year, and McNary looks to grab a few wins in the second year of the current coaching regime. Don’t worry—details are coming.
A few photos from last season are being scattered about this very brief item—taken by me, Rebekah Wilhite, and Laura Ellison. I hope to work with both of the photogs again this season, if possible, while adding a third camera covering West Salem athletics as well. We look forward to working with Crystal. Details have not been set, so thanks for your patience.
ALSO—schedules for Salem-Keizer varsity football fans will be available via a link to a Facebook page for Full Access Sports. Click to get there and see what you have.
Here is the LINK to Full Access Sports on Facebook. There will is a complete conference schedule, radio broadcast schedules for both KBZY and KYKN Radio, and photos of the broadcasters—with their faces for radio. Also-a McKay schedule for their games at the 5A level.
Everybody enjoy the season!

I'd like to see the old Valley League conference (4A) rise up, with it's history and traditions, and this trophy for all CP stuff end. Silverton High School would be a great addition. Best to all Salem High Schools this 2023 Football season, GO VIKS.
