Huber to lead North Salem Boys Hoops
Former West Salem and Western Oregon athlete takes over for Lane McLeod
Returning players for the North Salem boys basketball team got to meet their new coach today.
33 year old Bryan Huber, who has spent the last eight years assisting with the basketball and football programs at McKay, has been tabbed as the newest Vikings hoops coach. He succeeds Lane McLeod, who stepped down after four seasons at the helm.
Huber, who graduated from West Salem High in 2006, and Western Oregon in 2010, says he is excited about the opportunity to direct the North Salem program.
“It’s a great opportunity to work with kids that have a pathway to success,” says Huber.
“Having worked over with McKay the past several years, working with similar clientele and demographics, it is on my heart to work at a place like North Salem, with all the tradition… and now you have all the new athletic facilities over here that are outstanding.”
Not all the returning players were available for this initial meeting due to the spring sports taking place at present, but he is making plans for open gyms next week, and will follow up with summer activities soon.
North Salem will return to the 6A ranks next fall, after spending a couple of years at the 5A level. Huber is excited to keep the league games in Salem and Keizer. He fondly remembers his playing days under Larry Gahr and Scott Cross at West Salem, and hopes to see his team actively competing each week.
North fans should also find Huber filling a role as an assistant football coach next fall under Coach Jeff Flood. Huber has been friends with Vikings defensive coordinator Caleb Singleton since fifth grade, and he is ready to work with him again. Both men played football at Western Oregon.
As a former Western Oregon footballer, he says he is completely comfortable pulling on the red and black gear of the Vikings, since they share the same color scheme.
