Sports slows just a bit during the Christmas holidays, but there are still brief news pieces to share. Here are a few that have been announced fairly recently.
Local soccer sensation will return: Former Cascade High and Corban University soccer standout Jordan Farr is still feeling the buzz from his San Antonio FC squad’s victory in the United Soccer League’s championship finals—where they defeated Louisville 3-1 to claim the title.
Jordan was also named the Division 2 USL’s goalkeeper of the year, and in the last week, he signed a new, multi-year contract to return to San Antonio FC next season. Terms were not released.
Jordan tied a USL record with 15 shutouts this past season. He also had a great save percentage of 76 percent.
Farr and his wife are back in the Salem area—and he is offering goalkeeping training sessions for the next two months. Inquiries can be made through Farr’s training page at https://www.facebook.com/FarrBetterGK
South Salem football star commits to Portland State: South Salem’s Zach Wusstig, who led the Saxons in receiving and was also a top defensive back in Special District One football this year, will be taking his talents to Portland State University next season.
The 6-1, 190 pound senior—who transferred to South from Jefferson High in Southern Marion County—tallied nearly 900 yards in total offense for the Saxons, who were the top Salem School out of SD1 with an 8-2 record on the year, losing in the first round of the 6A playoffs to Sherwood.
Wusstig—who also recorded three interceptions last season—was a first team all-district selection on offense (receiver) and defense (defensive back).
Wusstig will join former West Salem standout Brooks Ferguson at PSU. Ferguson redshirted as a quarterback last season for the Vikings.
Little big running back heading for Oregon: Westview running back Jordan Fisher—who ran rough shod over Sprague and North Salem in the inaugural Columbia Cup playoff bracket—has decided to play Division One college football. Fisher announced online this past week that he will be playing football for the Oregon Ducks.
The 5-8, 175 pound Fisher ran for just shy of three thousand yards (2,964) and 40 touchdowns this past year. His best game was the Columbia Cup title game vs. North Salem on November 25th, when he rumbled for 418 yards on 36 carries and recorded five touchdowns in a 51-22 win.
North Salem head coach Jeff Flood says he is not surprised that Fisher has jumped above initial expectations of his playing at FCS Division Montana, joking that Jordan’s performance against the Vikings likely bumped him up a level to play weekends in Eugene.
Fisher will be in camp with former West Salem lineman Holden Whipple, who was on the Ducks roster this season.
